Olympus lens test: 12-40mm F/2.8 vs. 17mm f/1.8 (with test photos)

This is the extreme bottom right corner, but the camera was has held vertically (which means the upper right of the image is the corner).

The 17mm was on an Olympus E-M1, and the 12-40mm was on an Olympus E-P5.

I can’t really tell which is sharper. I think maybe the 17mm lens is slightly sharper but the 12-40mm lens has slightly better contrast. Also, it’s very important to note (although it’s not that obvious here) that the 12-40mm lens is more resistant to purple fringing at the corners at this focal length.

I think that some of my test photos may have been compromised by shutter shock. So I’m not 100% sure about whether the 12-40mm lens is as sharp as the 17mm lens.
